Post-Contest Lessons and Revisions

It's been a couple weeks since we ran our first contest here at PG GAMES. We considered it to be a rousing success and it's a great feeling to get your work in the hands of others.

In the meantime, we've gotten some great constructive feedback about our latest product, THE DARK LANDS, which led to some revisions for the Alchem Adept micro-playbook. In short, we scrapped the initial design concept which had a lot of legacy typos and design errors. Lesson learned: proof better! Starting from the ground up, we completely re-hashed the Alchem Adept and are proud with how it stands now. It's clearer how it is intended to work, and all in all it just is better design. The files for THE DARK LANDS have been updated both at DriveThru RPG and Lulu to reflect this.

The biggest takeaway is that here at PG GAMES, we love feedback. Seriously. We know that a lot of folks don't really enjoy receiving criticism, even when constructive, but we thrive on it. How can we be the best we can possibly be if we don't know what we're doing wrong? So, if you have feedback or suggestions for us, please do not hesitate to contact us on Twitter or via email and just let us know. (sorcerer DOT blob AT gmail DOT com)

Thanks again to everyone who has shared a link to our games, participated in our latest contest, given us feedback, or whatever. We truly thank you!

Contest Winners!

Over the last week we hosted a contest to give away free print or PDF copies of our latest release, THE DARK LANDS: A Dark Fantasy Dungeon World Campaign. We posted all over social media and got a pretty great response for being a small no-name hobby publisher, one that we are quite happy with.

So, without further adieu, the contestants.

We had entries about what "dark fantasy" meant to them from Elstiko, Aaron, and Connor Lemp. Thank you all for your participation, it's very much appreciated!

Now for the results.

For PDF, the winner is Elstiko!

For Print, the winner is Aaron!

And you know what? What the heck, Connor, you get a PDF copy as well!

Please contact me with the appropriate details at: sorcerer DOT blob AT gmail DOT com

PG Games Contest!

How would you like to win a free print copy of The Dark Lands: A Dark Fantasy Dungeon World Campaign? Who wouldn’t like to win a free RPG something, right? It’s basically rhetorical!

PG GAMES is happy to announce that from now (6/3) to Sunday 6/7 at Midnight CST you have a chance to enter to win a print copy of a game from the PG Games library.

THE DARK LANDS is all about the dark fantasy and how the players in it affect change against the corruption that is ever-prevalent within in the Lands of Eternal Night. In it, characters are Stormwalkers, Beast Talkers, Sword Spirits, and Alchem Adepts. Stormwalkers traverse the world as the lightning strikes. Beast Talkers speak with and understand all sorts of creatures and beasts, even bidding favors from them at times. Sword Spirits are tied to powerful blades that house the spirits of their previous wielders. And finally, Alchem Adepts are well-versed in the lost art of the harvest. They take bits and pieces of flora and fauna to create potions and enhancements that can save the world.

To enter, you simply need to comment on this post and answer the question, "What does 'dark fantasy' mean to you?" [One entry per person. Only US residents are eligible for the print copy. If you are outside of the US, please make mention of that in your comment. Thanks!]

One lucky winner will receive a print copy of THE DARK LANDS. Another lucky contest entrant will receive a PDF copy of THE DARK LANDS.

Winners will be randomly selected and announced on Monday 6/8 around Noon CST

A look at things to come for PG Games

It's no secret that we love all things weird fantasy western here at PG GAMES. We consume it as media whenever we get a chance, including reading the ever-wonderful comic series The 6th Gun (which is apparently being made into an RPG setting for Savage Worlds) and indie comic series Pariah, Missouri

The fact is, despite our love for it, there isn't a lot of media that exists for this particular genre. Which, truly, is unfortunate. A lot of media that use the placard of "weird west" do so with strictly horror or supernatural elements thrown in. Which is great! But, not what we mean when we talk about weird fantasy westerns. For us, the emphasis is on the fantasy.

We dream of high octane games (or comics, or short stories, or whatever) where two spell-slingers stare each other down in the middle of a boomtown at midnight, the witching hour. Or even dragon rustlers or shootists fending off attacks from prairie dragons or land-sharks. Or what about a gang of train robbers boarding a locomotive from the back of their pegasi? Listen, we're willing to get crazy and whimsical here. Didn't we mention we love the emphasis of fantasy?

The point is, we love fantasy westerns and want to see more of them in gaming. And in fact, we've been toying with just this off and on (more off than on) for about two years now. Now its time to put our spurs to the dragon-hide and make this thing happen. Until it does, however, here is a preview of things to come:

PG Games proudly presents...

PG GAMES has been operating almost entirely on word of mouth since our first publication in March of 2014. As a small and hobby-based publisher, we've seen success and achieved our initial goals, which was to get something out there in the RPG realm that we could be proud of. And we are.

The Baron of Blood: A Dungeon World Campaign Front was a pleasure to create and learn from. The intricacies of design, layout, and editing taught us invaluable lessons. With help and advice from other RPG publishers, we eventually moved on from just print copies through Lulu to PDFs as well through DriveThru RPG and RPG Now. We even toyed around with the Pay What you Want format and liked what we found.

Throughout April and May of this year, we worked hard to create another installment in PG Games' porfolio, The Dark Lands: A Dark Fantasy Dungeon World Campaign. The Dark Lands was a bit different from our previous endeavors, in both content and page count. This larger product learned from the lessons of The Baron of Blood and sought to improve upon them. We are incredibly happy to announce that we published The Dark Lands yesterday in PDF through DriveThru RPG and RPG Now and in print through Lulu.

THE DARK LANDS: A DARK FANTASY DUNGEON WORLD CAMPAIGN

In time memorial, a war was fought and the Light lost to the Darkness.

In the Dark Lands, the Lands of Eternal Night, the light continues to fade as its brave denizens fight to survive against corruption and fell taint. Magic is scarce and all but gone, and yet otherworldly creatures and politics threaten daily life and existence. Life is bleak.

THE DARK LANDS is a fantasy heartbreaker campaign setting and hack of Dungeon World. Inside are custom playbooks such as the Stormbringer and Beast-Talker that better embrace the tone and feeling of the Lands of Eternal Night, several fronts, steadings, and other dangers for use by DMs that embrace the Dungeon World ethos of "draw maps, leave blanks." Additionally are write ups for monsters and other creatures, treasures, and other rules that better fit the setting of the Dark Lands.
